Annual Study Report 2022/23

In the academic year of 2022/23, I attained a higher GPA and was accepted into the Tiger program for my efforts, participated in the SEE student chapter, was employed by MTR as a summer intern, and completed a guided research program.

I completed 13 courses (37 credits) in total, gained SGPAs of 4.11/4.3 and 3.98/4.3 in semester A/B, respectively. The relevant coursework includes Internet Applications, Electromagnetic Principles, Data Analysis, Engineering Communication, Data Science and Engineering Thermofluids. I gained skills in statistical analysis, website development (HTML, CSS), CAD (computer-aided design), and BIM (building information modeling).

In September 2022, I was elected as the External Vice President of the SEE student chapter. We organized the traditional SEE barbeque night at the end of semester A and gathered 100+ fellow students to enjoy the event.

My summer internship at MTR Co. Ltd. was a significant learning experience. I was tasked with analyzing the data on patronage and electricity consumption of Hong Kong railways, and I successfully developed an internal tool to extract data from the controller summary of the Tsing Yi Super Operational Control Centre. I also trained a predictive model using LightGBM from the extracted database, which can now forecast electricity consumption given patronage and other factors. This experience not only enhanced my programming and machine learning skills but also significantly improved my problem-solving abilities, marking a significant professional growth in my career.

I studied electromagnetic principles in semester A and was deeply impressed by the topic of motor control. Hence, I sought the course leader, Prof. LIU Chunhua, as my supervisor in research on this topic. In my spare time, I studied control theories, motor control, circuit principles, and software (MATLAB Simulink, Keil) to implement a control scheme. Eventually, I finished the guided study in the summer of 2023, and I proposed a control scheme for a five-leg inverter dual motor system, which integrates swarm intelligence, model predictive, and field-weakening control. This scheme could automatically tune parameters using algorithms and perform steadily at high operation speed.

Annual Study Report 2023/24

In the academic year of 2023/24, I excelled in coursework, further cultivated my leadership, participated in competitions hosted by EMSD and HKIE, and completed an exchange program and an internship.

I completed 13 courses (36 credits) in total, gained an SGPA of 4.2/4.3 in semester A, and made a formal academic exchange in semester B to the University of Leeds, UK. The relevant coursework includes Database Management, Algorithms and Data Structure, Climate Change, Computer Programming, Energy Efficiency for Buildings, and Power Plant Engineering. From the coursework, I gained computer programming skills in C++, SQLite3, and Python, as well as EMOs (energy management opportunities) for buildings through improvements in various aspects.

Throughout this academic year, I continued my role in the SEE student chapter and served as PIC for multiple activities. We organized SEE orientation for freshmen at the beginning of the academic year and the annual dinner, with 100+ participants, respectively. We established a partnership with O-park and liaised site visits for our undergraduate students.

In March 2024, I took part in the Save Energy Championship Scheme organized by EMSD and won the Merit Hanson Award (Bronze Award), with an entry called Smart Electricity Consumption Management System (SECMS), it is a prediction model based on machine learning to provide a higher precision baseline in the energy auditing process. The system is programmed in Python and was independently developed by me.

I participated in the HK Engineers' Week GBA High School Tournament organized by HKIE. We cooperated with team Zhongshan University, Zhuhai, and won a second prize.

In the summer of 2024, I was engaged in the Green Skills Placement hosted by HKFYG Leadership Institute, and completed an internship in Shenzhen Hailei New Energy Co. Ltd. as an assistant engineer. During the internship, I developed a simulation program for an Energy Management System (EMS) that connects photovoltaics, the power grid, Battery Management System (BMS), and Power Conversion System (PCS). The program, implemented on an embedded Linux device, enables real-time computation and 485 communications. Furthermore, I Improved the company's existing BMS communication program by introducing a mid-level machine and implementing a program on an embedded device that allows basic read/write operations with the battery BMS circuit board.

From the internship, I gained hands-on experience in industrial battery assembly and inverter testing under the guidance of engineers, mastering basic schematic reading, writing skills, and testing standards. This experience not only enhanced my practical skills but also provided me with a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of the energy industry, which is directly relevant to my field of study.

I worked hard in first half of the year, achieved a lot and enjoy the rest half in UK. Just like after a blink of eyes, the final year is around the corner and I need to make significant decisions for my future. I have determined to pursue a creative career with a postgraduate degree, and I wish to be offered a place in a good university in the coming year through my efforts.
